Redwood and Sequoia National Parks

Redwood National Park

Located along California’s rugged northern coastline, Did you know that nearly half of the world’s remaining old-growth coast redwoods are protected within Redwood National and State Parks? These ancient giants once blanketed much of California’s coast, but after the Gold Rush, the logging industry quickly changed that. Thankfully, today, these majestic forests are preserved as part of one of only three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in California. And hidden somewhere among these towering trees is Hyperion—the world’s tallest tree—kept secret to protect it from crowds of curious adventurers like us!

Choosing which groves to explore might just be your toughest challenge—and what a great problem to have! Start with these three spectacular spots: Stout Memorial Grove in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, often called the world’s most scenic redwood grove; Lady Bird Johnson Grove, a lovely, easy stroll near the Kuchel Visitor Center with plenty of history and educational opportunities; and the awe-inspiring Grove of the Titans, where you can wander along an elevated boardwalk and learn about the extraordinary ecology of the area.

For something truly unique, don’t miss Fern Canyon. This lush, green canyon feels like stepping into a prehistoric world (no wonder it starred in Jurassic Park!). Splash across the stream, marvel at towering fern-lined walls, and maybe even pack rainboots for a little extra adventure. There’s so much more to discover—so take your time, wander a scenic drive, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll stumble upon a hidden gem of your own.

Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park is the second oldest National Park and a UNESCO Biosphre Reserve, truly one of California’s crown jewels! Imagine standing beneath the world’s largest trees, breathing in crisp mountain air, and soaking up views of dramatic granite domes and breathtaking alpine scenery. If you’ve been longing for an adventure filled with epic hikes, ancient giants, and awe-inspiring landscapes, this is your dream destination.

What sets Sequoia apart? For starters, it’s the proud home of the legendary General Sherman Tree—the largest tree on Earth by volume. This tree is a staggering 275 feet tall and 36 feet in diameter. Wander through the enchanting Giant Forest with hundreds of massive sequoias, including the famous Congress Trail and the Trail of 100 giants in the Long Meadow Grove. Explore peaceful meadows like Crescent Meadow, or challenge yourself with a climb up Moro Rock for jaw-dropping, 360-degree views.

Unlike busier parks, Sequoia often feels like your own private wonderland, even during peak season. No matter your pace, there’s something for everyone. Take a leisurely stroll along Big Trees Trail, and explore fascinating marble caverns, like Crystal Cave with colorful stalactites, stalagmites and a fascinating pioneer history. For a fun photo op, that a photo at the historic Tunnel Log that you can actually drive through!

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a scenic escape, Sequoia National Park offers endless opportunities to connect with nature and create unforgettable memories.
